A Few Minutes with the Rolex Submariner Date

What can I possibly add to the mountain of words already written about the Rolex Submariner Date? Not much on the historical side. What I can offer is a little time with my own.

This watch wins in the hand before it wins on paper. The first thing I notice every time I pick it up is the feeling of complete control. Nothing feels loose. Nothing feels approximate. The bezel turns with that dense, smooth, perfectly damped action people always talk about, and for once the praise feels earned. The crown screws down with a firm, reassuring certainty. The clasp adjustment feels crisp and exact. Every small interaction reminds you that Rolex put serious thought into the tactile side of ownership, not just the look of the thing.

The current Submariner Date, reference 126610LN, comes in a 41mm Oystersteel case with a black Cerachrom bezel, 300 meters of water resistance, Rolex’s caliber 3235 automatic movement, and about a 70-hour power reserve. It also uses the Oyster bracelet with the Oysterlock clasp and Glidelock extension system. On paper, that gives you the modern luxury-diver checklist. On the wrist, it comes across as something better sorted than most of its competition.

I got lucky with mine and picked it up from an authorized dealer after a few months on the list. I know that experience does not happen for everyone. I also own a Rolex Day-Date, and I will write about that one another time. But this is the Rolex I reach for more often. The Day-Date carries more ceremony. The Submariner asks fewer questions. It just goes.

For all the talk, all the hype, and all the overexposure, the simple truth remains: the Rolex Submariner Date feels exactly like a watch this famous should feel.
